The book, Silk Stocking Street by Rachel
Paris, is a charming, funny little book about growing up in the early
1900s, in a small town on a street called Silk Stocking. The street was so
called because the ladies living in the large Victorian houses could
afford to wear silk stockings, especially on Sundays.

Although they were not real relations, she called the neighbors
Grandpa, Grandma, Aunt or Uncle, and she describes many characters among
them. The book holds wonderful, descriptive accounts of a happy and loving
world of two brothers, family, neighbors and friends; and a marvelous
mixture of animals, including Billy, the billy goat who was hitched to
their "Studebaker" wagon, and who was taught not to move until his tail
was "cranked". The lifestyle of nearly a century ago is told with a keen
sense of humor, giving pleasure to readers of any background.
